I rarely meet senior leaders who want to micromanage. What I see instead are leaders with powerful strengths (responsibility, high standards, strategic thinking) operating under pressure.
When the stakes rise…
When transformation gets messy…
When results feel fragile…
Even powerful strengths can overextend.
Responsibility becomes ➡️ carrying more than is yours to carry.
Maximizer becomes ➡️ refining what doesn’t need refining.
Strategic becomes ➡️ stepping into decisions others should own.
Here’s the critical distinction:
Microleadership says: “I’ll jump in when needed. I’ve got you.”
Micromanagement says: “I need to stay in this. I can’t risk letting go.”
When pressure triggers over-control, teams contract. But when leaders regulate their pressure response enough to let others carry weight, something different happens.
Confidence grows.
Capability grows.
And often, joy replaces vigilance.
