This made me smile! And it also captures why every December I make my case for skipping New Year’s resolutions altogether. Not because goals aren’t important. They are. But because resolutions tend to be fragile. One setback and they often get abandoned.
There’s a better way, and my clients consistently find it more effective: Choose 1–3 words to guide your year.
Not resolutions. Not rigid promises. Just a few words that act like a north star. Clear enough to focus you, flexible enough to grow with you.
These words become a filter for decisions, priorities and habits. They keep your attention on what matters without the “all-or-nothing” pressure that makes most resolutions fade by February.
Leaders especially benefit from this simplicity. When you’re carrying a lot, clarity beats complexity every time.
So as you look toward the coming year, ask yourself: What word (or words) do you want to own in 2026? Which words would strengthen your leadership, your relationships or your wellbeing?
I’d love to hear yours!
