My dad always used to say, “There are three things we need in life: 1. Something to love 2. Something to do 3. Something to look forward to.” This quote immediately made me think of his wise words – especially the part about the power of looking forward.
As leaders, we’re often encouraged to reflect—on performance, on lessons learned, on missed opportunities. And let’s be honest—we all have things we wish we’d handled differently. Conversations we would reword. Decisions we’d tweak. But what shifts everything is the tone of our self-talk. If we frame our reflections with grace, and keep our eyes on what’s ahead, we build cultures where possibility thrives.
So here’s my encouragement: Be the kind of leader who models forward-looking optimism, even when the past is messy. (Especially then.) It gives your team permission to do the same—and that’s when real progress happens. What’s something you’re looking forward to this quarter?
