Want your team to learn more? Start by acknowledging uncertainty and the opportunity in that. It might feel risky, but saying “I don’t know” isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a signal of strength. Especially for leaders.

More importantly, it’s a catalyst for learning. When we lead with curiosity instead of certainty, we create space for others to think, share, explore and grow. Research backs this up: When teachers openly admit what they don’t know, students become more engaged—and even perform better. The same holds true in the workplace.

Saying “I don’t know”…

  • Encourages inquiry over ego
  • Builds psychological safety and belonging
  • Models that failure isn’t fatal—it’s part of the process
  • Opens the door to collaborative learning
  • Promotes divergent thinking and fresh ideas

If you want your team to ask more, try more, and grow more—start by modeling what it looks like to not have all the answers. Say it with confidence: “I don’t know. Let’s figure it out together.”
