A Secret to Skyrocketing Engagement

Want to build an engaged team? Here’s a secret: Development! Gallup found that 9 out of 10 employees who have someone at work encouraging their development are engaged. Think about that—engagement isn’t just about pay or perks. It’s about growth and learning.

As leaders, the way we invest in our people—through mentorship, opportunities to stretch, and coaching—shapes the culture of our teams. Who on your team needs a nudge toward their potential? How are you making development a daily practice?

Here’s my suggestion:

1. Ask your team member every quarter, “What do you most want to learn?” “Where would you like to be by the end of next quarter re: your knowledge, expertise and skill?”

2. Then brainstorm books, classes, LinkedIn and other community offerings, organizations and associations. Think about people in your circle who you can introduce them to for quick conversations and who can coach, mentor or develop them in the area they want to be developed.

3. At your next quarterly meeting follow up. Say, “You said you wanted to learn about ________. How’s that going? How can I support your interest in growing that skill?”

Let’s grow and develop our people so we have learning organizations and teams that are strong and engaged.
